He is an unlikely hero, displaying unexpected heroism in many stories, yet without which it would not be possible to understand the story of "Oka Raja Dewa" (10th century). Of all narratives about Rajawali, "Oka Raja Dewa", the story about "Rajawali at Pekalongan" is the most famous and popular. The most common themes in this story are the feud between Dewa Muda and Rajawali, the hero's adventure on the island of Bawean, and taming of Rajawali by Jara Sakti (Power of Woman). A contemporary version, reworked now as a movie (Remaja Gangsa) is also based on this story. Rajawali was not born out of a wish for heroism, however. He was born to ordinary people; he had no status or title. He is usually portrayed as a poor bricklayer who had worked on many important buildings (e.g., border fortification) for powerful men like Dewa Muda (Lord of Death). The common people, however, wanted to occupy the place of Dewa Muda and Rajawali. In order to show his power, Dewa Muda killed his own father, Mahadewa Bhima Madhu Karna Madhava Rajasya, also known as Tuan Rumah Sakti (Lord of the House), a title given to a powerful man in the hierarchy of the society. This made a deep impact on Rajawali who was born after Mahadewa died. After Dewa Muda was defeated by his stepbrother Bajrajnatha, he swore that neither he nor his descendants would reign over Pekalongan forever. Seeing the aggrieved state of his fellowmen, Rajawali swore to kill Dewa Muda, no matter what it takes. He went on a secret trip to Bawean with his colleague Bantiguna, but he was impeded along his way by an island of giants led by Tumpaluh. Rajawali was defeated and brought to Bawean. Yet the journey turned out to become a blessing for Rajawali. His fellowman Ranggisan of Paseban had indeed come looking for him, but only after the latter had accidentally made out of clay the likeness of Dewa Muda's daughter whom he secretly loved. cfa1e77820
